While driving with my son one day we spoke about fear – how people allow fear to enslave them and how it affects them. He related how the behavior of some of his friends seemed unexplained at times or in certain circumstances. I noticed the first sign of fear in the bible after Adam and Eve sinned. The spirit of fear entered and drove them away from God – Genesis 3: 10 “I heard Your voice in the garden and was afraid because I was naked, so I hid myself.”
I explained to him how I overcame anxiety and depression through meditating on the word of God and revelation from the Holy Spirit. The scripture that I mediated on is 2 Timothy 1: 7 “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control.”
In order to remove negative thoughts, you need to replace them with positive ones. I replaced the fearful thoughts with the scriptures and believed that I have the power to overcome through self control – Acts 1: 8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;”
People fear the unknown or that which they cannot explain. Jesus freed us from all bondage including the spirit of fear. Fear makes us weak, oppressive, aggressive, depressive, evil and separates us from God. We hide away from God because of sin in our lives.
Proverbs 1: 7 says “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (MEV)
The fear of the Lord is not being afraid of God, but understanding that He is a God of love and mercy to those who seek Him. He is a God to be feared to those who choose to turn away from Him. You will only get to know Him once you diligently seek Him through prayer, the word and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
This verse in Proverbs 8: 13 sums it up very simply: “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.” (MEV)
